Sat 12.5.07, Helsinki, around 2 pm. Recording of ascending from the underground tunnels to the Railwaystation hall in central Helsinki. The central idea is the broadening of space - the noise made by the surrounding people drown into huge reverberation during the transition. Most of the sounds are made by footsteps, people talking, the rustling of clothes, ventilation and such.

Sat 12.5.07, Helsinki, noon. A recording from the Esplanadi boulevard in Helsinki during the Eurovision final day, so there are a lot of tourist attractions. The recording starts from a blacksmiths stall (people talking, traffic, sound of hammer hitting metal) proceeds past a fountain (water, wind hum, people, faint music in background) and gets closer to the Esplanadi stage where a folk song just ends, ending with applause.

Sat 12.5.07, Helsinki, noon. A transition from the street to inside a department store. The recording starts with applause as there is a breakdance performance going on the street (music, handclapping, people talking, cars faintly in background). Music gets quieter as I get further away from the dancers and the ambience changes when I enter the department store (no music, lot of people, clothes rustling, footsteps etc).

Sat 12.5.07, Helsinki, around 1 pm. A transition from outside Kamppi shopping center (bus engine noise, distant traffic, footsteps, people) to inside it (escalator -> footsteps, weird rhytmic and pitched sound, restaurants close by).

A recording starting in a metro tunnel on a platform where a metro is just arriving (people talking, footsteps, sound of a metro arriving, pneumatic sound of doors opening), entering a metro (moving into a smaller space), a short metro ride (bizarre chatter, metro moving) and exiting metro (doors opening, broadening of ambience).

Sat 12.5.07, Helsinki, around 1 pm. Leaving the Kamppi shopping center from a secluded door. People talking, footsteps on stone, dishes etc in a hall -> escalator -> hall reverberation disappears, cars, footsteps on gravel, a small construction site, skateboarders.

Sat 12.5.07, Helsinki, around 3 pm. A transition from the big hall of the Pasila trainstation (footsteps on stone, people talking) and exiting it through the main doors (sliding doors) and standing a while on the parking lot (seaqulls, people talking, traffic, car engine noise etc)

Sat 12.5.07, Helsinki, around 4 pm. Walking out of the main post office in Helsinki centrum. Starting with talking people, footsteps, clothes rustling etc drowned in hall ambience, proceeding through some loud doors, entering street (traffic, car engine noise, lots of people etc).

Sat 12.5.07, Helsinki, around 1 pm. A transition from the Kamppi shopping center hall (footsteps, people talking, dishes, hall ambience) with long escalators (loud escalator sound, ventilation, people) to the metrotunnel (less people, footsteps, chatter etc).

Sat 12.5.07, Helsinki, around 1 pm. A transition from a restaurant inside the Kamppi shopping center (dishes, clings, chatter, quiet music, baby) to the Kamppi hall (hall ambience, high peopliness, footsteps).

Sat 12.5.07, Helsinki, around 4 pm. Exiting a Unicafe student cafeteria. Ventilation, chatter, dishes -> approaching the dish return: loud ventilation, loud dishes -> exiting to street: distant traffic, chatter, footsteps.

Sat 12.5.07, Helsinki, around 1 pm. Starting next to a loud ventilation duct, moving across the Kamppi square and entering a Nokia booth.

There was a classical concert in the hall of the railway station. The record shows the sound of an interior space where there is a concert (piano, violin, cello...), voices of people, steps, doors to an otdoor space, the street and the sounds you can find there (cars, people, sounds which indicat that people can cross the street).

This is a record of a train annoucement. After this you can hear a door, steps and the sounf of a concert of classic music which progressively is getting louder.

The record starts inside of a tram. It´s possible to hear of the stops and the doors opening. Next, you heard the street (cars as well as the sound signals of the traffic lights to the pedestrians) and the way I do until arriving to the metro. It´s possible to heard voices of people and, progressively the sound of a saxofon played by a metro musician.

May 12th, afternoon. Ottawa. Peopliness: None, or one if you count me (this is true of all the recordings - ?) Inside a driving car; turn signals, etc; stops, parks, keys out, seatbelt off, car door opens, exit, door closes. Birds etc.

Not the most effective transition in the world - steady sound of rapids in the background throughout (stronger when closer to water); but transition from 'in the woods' (birds etc) to 'by the water' (water lapping at the shore etc) provides some sense of transition...

May 10 late afternoon. Mud Lake, Ottawa. Outdoors. Zero peopliness. Medium density. No traffic (well, some quite distant traffic.)
This is an attempt at a transition between two entirely outdoor 'spaces' - an open lake versus within the woods. The spatial shift is a bit subtle, though slightly supported by a shift in the sound sources (less/more birds/frogs/crickets...)

May 10th, late afternoon. Mud Lake conservation area, Ottawa. Outdoors. Zero peopliness. In the woods (birds etc); a plane passes overhead, close enough to be quite loud. Does this constitute a transition? I have not moved; my space has not changed. But the shift from natural sound to the sound of the plane is a dramatic shift in cultural space... (Plus the plane has a nice symbolic link with our themes of transitions, different local and geographical spaces, etc...)

Begins in the parking lot; grocery carts rolling on pavement; car ignition; through sliding doors, into grocery store; carts being pushed together, crowd noise, cash noise; out into the mall - crowd noise, similar to grocery space but without cash, carts; push-doors into vestibule on the way outside - small space, doors opening and closing, music playing.
